Frame Size Guide
Measure a rectangle frame with confidence
Start with the piece itself. Record width first, then height, and keep the item size separate from the visible opening and finished outside dimensions.
The essential rule
Width × height, measured in inches
An 18 × 24 inch frame is 18 inches wide and 24 inches high. Turn the same dimensions sideways and it becomes a 24 × 18 landscape orientation.
Three useful measurements
Know which rectangle you are describing
1. Item size
The physical width and height of the art, photo, poster, or mirror. Measure the object itself, not its listed or expected size.
2. Visible opening
The area visible inside a mat or frame lip. It may be slightly smaller than the item so edges are safely held or concealed.
3. Outside frame size
The total wall footprint. It includes the opening, optional mat borders, and frame profile on all sides.
Reference dimensions
Common rectangular sizes
These familiar dimensions are reference points, not limits. Always measure your actual piece before requesting a frame.
Practical measuring steps
Before you submit a request
- Place the piece flat and use a rigid ruler or tape in good condition.
- Measure width across the top, middle, and bottom; note any variation.
- Measure height at the left, center, and right.
- Record the smallest dimensions if the piece is uneven, and tell us about the variation.
- Note whether the orientation is portrait (taller), landscape (wider), or square.
- If wall space is limited, also measure the maximum available outside width and height.
A photograph of the piece beside the measuring tool can help clarify unusual edges or dimensions. Final sizing is discussed before an order is confirmed.
